Telling People What DoFollow Really Is…

Submitted by R.J. Breakaway Adams on Sunday, 20 April 200822 Comments

There are many people wanting to know what “Dofollow” and “nofollow” are. I see it in my search engine stats for the keywords people use to search for my site, and one of my first posts, What is DoFollow? What is NoFollow? Follow Along and See, comes up high in the search engines.

But, maybe I am not doing a good enough job getting the information out. While compiling dofollow blogs for my upcoming DoFollow Blog Search Engine, I was searching through dofollow lists found on other sites, and I was finding that between 33-40% of the blogs listed on those dofollow lists were now nofollow.

Now, it’s fine is webmasters want to change from dofollow to nofollow, but here are 2 things that frustrate me about the dofollow movement and what needs to be fixed about them:

1) Pruning DoFollow lists.
Why aren’t webmasters, who’ve complied such lists and even link to them in their recent posts (they are doing internal link building right) pruning their lists, adding new blogs to them while removing the ones who are no longer dofollow? This needs to be done. Yah, I am lazy too, but if you are going to advertise something as a dofollow list, please do follow-through with your advertising by providing a solid list!

2) DoFollow is part of the link structure, not clicking on a link.
While browsing some blogs, there were a few webmasters under the impression that “DoFollow” meant that if you comment on their blog, they’ll click on the link and visit your site. While that can be good, that’s not what do follow is. Do follow has to do with the link structure, and adding rel=”nofollow” or not. I won’t go into here…. Click the link in the first sentence of this blog for more details on the specifics of dofollow.

Sorry for venting frustrations, but these are the types of issues that hinder our link building efforts.

No need to apologise for venting. This issue gets to me, too.

Another problem in this area is semi-follow blogs: blogs that give dofollows to registered users only or after a certain number of comments. I don’t remember ever seeing a D-list that indicates when that’s the case. Will it be part of your search engine?

RT Cunningham of Untwisted Vortex has taken up this mammoth task of reviewing every single blog for doFollow when submitted to him in a comment. The Do Follow, CommentLuv and KeywordLuv Blog List will tell you everything you need to know. Even, which blogs allow doFollow after a certain number of comments.

Excellent post, it really irks me to find those advertising as do-follow when they aren’t.

This is also the first I’ve heard of keywordluv…very cool :-)

I think you all need to be a little careful when taking a shot at bloggers who appear on dofollow lists who actually have nofollow on their blog comments.

My blog was actually one of the first on the original dofollow list. I’ve changed my mind a couple of times over the last year or so, and thus added and removed nofollow.

It is absolutely NOT my responsibility what people put on these lists. Yes, my blog was dofollow when it was added to the list, but I wasn’t asked if I wanted to be on the list (if I had, I would have responded with a resounding NO! - I could do without the spam I get from people using these lists), and I am not responsible for notifying the list owners if I change my mind, and add nofollow at some point in the future.

So before you vent your vitriol on the bloggers who have changed their mind in regard to the whole dofollow/nofollow thing - go after the maintainers of the lists who are too lazy to keep them up to date

This wasn’t aimed towards the dofollow or nofollow bloggers….. do what you will with your blogs… It’s to the people who have a list, promote that list in many of their future posts and on forums, and then never prune the list to see who’s still dofollow and who’s not.

If you are a blogger advertising dofollow and you aren’t, then my frustration is at you.

But your blog is awesome…. so of course I’m not hating on you!

Yes, i went back and forth and decided on including the “certain number of comments” dofollow blogs…. commenting, which helps link building, is meant for contributing to the discussion of the blog.

People are going to spam with my search engine, thats a fact of any application on the net, but I am not going to promote it, therefore, I will be including such blogs since they are dofollow if you contribute to their blog…. plus you will be able to have more deep backlinks the more comments you make, plus more chances for exposure.

Actually, another thing that’s sort of frustrating is that even when you find do=follow blogs, you don’t necessarily get the link love right away….they’re condtional do follow, i.e. on the condition you leave 5 comments first. I wish there was a way to figure that out. Actually, how do you figure out if a blog is do-follow or not in the first place?

If a blog makes it on a Do-Follow list, they probably start to get an onslaught of spam comments, get sick of it, and switch to No-Follow.

I keep my own little list in a Netvibes tab. Do-Follow, Do-Follow & CommentLuv, and CommentLuv & No-Follow.

I don’t understand everyone complaining about the spam. At least with wordpress, Akismet has never let one through on any of my blogs. And if it did, I would most likely catch it before long.
I had spam before I even knew what dofollow was. If you have traffic you have to accept that spammers will target you automatically with their spam engines and such.

This commentluv plugin you have activates is nice but some of the time I don’t really want my last post to be linked to because it is so crappy! But you get two links back on a do-follow blog which is nice.

    2 things…

    1) Don’t write crappy posts…. waste of your time, waste of your readers time…

    2) The new CommentLuv in the works will let you choose between like your last 3-5 posts…. so that should help you out!

I like the idea of the comment love - but I also like the keyword luv features. There are many small businesses needing those keywords. I feel that as long as they read the article and take time to notice the advertisements - then everyone is getting what they want. The fact is - for now, the search engines want those links. Hopefully it will continue to change and the internet will become more efficient.

I agree with you about the need to maintain your list. If you find one supposedly do follow that’s really a no - follow, it really destroys the credibility for all the other links!

The keywordLuv plugin is great, I am a huge fan. I have found that it generates a lot of comments. It also makes leaving a comment like this, where I want to promote one of my sites feel a lot more honest. Cheers for using it.

I like the keywordluv plugin as it allows people to use keywords but allows people to talk to each other as it will also have their nickname or real name. This makes conversation a lot easier between commenters as you are able to communicate by name instead of by keyword.

  • gadgets said:

Commentluv plugin is very fantastic. I always recommend the blogger who is having blog that always use some plugin like this. Even tom commenter is also best so that the visitor who is posting regular comment will be satisfied by viewing his name in top commentor.
Also regarding spammer I would like to inform all blog owner that never make the comment link dofollow unless commenter reach 20post and that too with unique and relevant reply.
Specify at the bottom of your post that “After specific number of comment you post will be do follow. Have patient and don’t spam”
I am sure breakaway no one will do spam and you will get relevant replies and genunie even great traffic.
    Thanks

The “unpruned” do follow lists are a problem that will be perpetual due to the fact that many webmasters will use a do follow plugin with the hopes of getting free content by way of comments but they quickly realize that it simply leads to a barrage of spam comments. It is simply human nature to try to get as much as you can without giving up much, so once they get on search engines/lists, etc. they turn the plugins off.

  • txtmate said:

There are ways to automate the pruning of dofollow and nofollow sites instead of doing it manually.

As for requiring multiple comments before allowing dofollow may not be a good idea if commenters do not hang out in your blog. This is more applicable to forums such as my link building community where most topics are consistent with the forum’s theme.
